Thoughts // It’s Rarely About Motivation

It’s easy for us to look at someone’s success and blame our lack of motivation.

“I just wish I had the motivation.”

“I can never find the motivation that I need to continue.”

I’m starting to think it’s rarely about motivation but more about pain.

Specifically, the avoidance of discomfort or pain at all costs. Even if the cost is a life that you’re not happy with. Even if the cost is a life that you don’t want to get out of bed in the morning for.

In order to move forward, we need to be willing to walk away from what doesn’t serve us:

– The friendships and close relationships that are holding us back.

– The job that is “safe” but isn’t allowing us to learn and grow.

– The material comforts and income that we may need to forego temporarily if we want to make a change.

– The comfort zone of complacency that we think is sheltering us from rejection and failure.

It’s not that most people lack the motivation.

It’s that most people aren’t willing to bear the pain of walking away.

They’re not willing to stand in their power, trust their instincts and break away from the herd.

The next time you think someone has more motivation than you, look closer. What is it that they’ve walked away from? What kind of discomfort are they stepping into?
